Day 51 (416) – February 20, 2019

Snow day.  Another day off which means another day tacked at the end of the school year which means another day taken from summer.  I know in some recent past post I mentioned that I rather enjoy snow days, quite a bit actually.  I don’t think it is really about the day off of school as much as it is a day to play in the snow.  Pretty sure it originates from the first snowfall in 2000, the kids and I converted the entire yard into some serious sledding paths and race down both sides of the house.  It really is ideal as there are two levels and a gradual decline so you are really motoring by the time you hit that much steeper second tier.  The second day would always be best as the paths would have been nice and packed while the overnight temps would produce a slicker surface.  In fact, we would often pack up a mound of snow at the bottom of the hill, right before that stop sign in the photo above, and create a pretty sweet ramp where the competition was to see who could fly the farthest.  This really only worked on the heavier snow days where the road still had some snow coverage (before the plows got aggressive).  The kids proved to be very intrepid standing at the top.  Even my daughter, from the time she was but a mere sprout, was fearless.  Better yet, on those days, the road directly in front of me, transformed into one of the best sledding hills ever.  We would start at the top and race down, with someone at the intersection to keep watch for any cars, and would usually be able to pass by our driveway, which is about where the blower is. Sometimes we would line up and form one long sled train.  But then, ultimately, I believe this is a case of be careful what you wish for.  As much as I love having these days off, come late June I will be right here bitching how much I hate snow days.
