8 years in the making, Beetlejuice (the musical) is set to become another, in the long line of many, musical adaptions of 80’s/90’s movies. This happens to be, on the road, preparing for its Broadway run by working out the kinks in Washington DC. I remember the first time I saw the movie. I am a big Michael Keaton fan and his performance was iconic. In my opinion, it is one of the most entertaining and unforgettable characters in film. I would have never imagined that the movie would make for a good musical. Except for Day-O and Shake, Senora there were no other songs to adapt. While I did just see the musical, this post is not a review. It just happens to be a chance to ask “where is creativity? or originality anymore? I understand the need for source material. Believe me, I look for it every day. But you would think with the amount of talent out there there would be a few original options that would play so much better than an iconic movie. And that isn’t limited to one genre. Films, songs, and broadway shows that are “remakes”, originally made in the 80’s or 90’s, confuse the heck out of me. Has the well run dry? You think we would be more advanced than that. While a revival does make sense in theatre, for the most part, is it absolutely necessary? I know there are plenty of people who eat that stuff up, I just finds it somewhat sad. Another reason why I enjoy spending time in Blogworld. The poetry, the art (all types) and the stories, so much originality and personality. I think I am at the point where I would consider putting the credit card down and enjoy scrolling through Reader. Great points about revivals and remakes. While some are nostalgic, it can be overdone! Way to weave in on the road!!

It was an out of town touring try-out! And I agree, I don’t mind nostalgia, but it just gets to be sad, especially if you take a look at what’s playing in theaters and see how much originality is not there.

I just don’t get what makes them think that they can do better. Granted there are a lot out there that could be done better, but they won’t be made because they suck! So why mess with what is already great?

Oh I’m completely with you! Stop remaking what we’ve already seen, heard or in there own right…classics! Where has creativity gone? It infuriates me really. Remake Dirty Dancing? Are you crazy! Lol

I totally can relate to what you’re saying here. Try to listen to the radio sometime and you’ll hear either generic modern pablum or the old hits from 40+ years ago, when music was good. The endless sequels on movies are another pet peeve. Remakes of iconic films (or turning iconic films into broadway shows). The people with all of the money want a secure investment and anything original or avant garde is pure speculation. Take the money out of the equation and you’ll get all kinds of creativity. Maybe that’s why you enjoy Word Press more and more?

What a great introspective. I would have to agree. Creativity shines when greed is absent. When it becomes more about money and less about art, well… And it’s probably not a coincidence why so many of those adaptions, revivals etc fail to last on stage or screen. Love the comment. Nope. I thought so too when I first heard that they were doing it. Which is why I went in the first place. Just very curious.
