Day 106 – April 16, 2018

Crank (DWP)

This is a view from the ground looking up at our winch system. A winch system are a set of winches that hang on a rail, that allow us to raise and lower battens that hold our light fixtures, curtains, legs and teasers.  This makes it much easier for us to move and adjust the lights as well as adjust the trim of the curtains.  Our system is a clew winch, which basically means that we have to crank them by hand.  We are fortunate enough to have one electric wench,  but it would be really nice if all of them were electric.  It is rather fascinating when you consider all the components that make up the fly system.  Let alone the fact that on the opposite end of the aircraft cable, suspends a batten that holds an enormous amount of weight, when it is loaded.  I have busted a number of knuckles on these handles as I raise or lower the lines.  And after a couple of years, I realized that it was a great workout for the students, so they should probably do it instead of me.  Hoping your heart holds a smile.
