A gobo, derived from “Go Between” or GOes Before Optics, was originally used on theatre stages, and is a physical template slotted inside, or placed in front of, a lighting source, used to control the shape of emitted light. I use gobs a lot in my light designs to help simulate patterns on the walls, floors and ceilings of the theatre. The shadows on the road actually look like a breakup pattern I have used.
